ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the moral and practical implications of a central issue of modern life: personal or individual safety. It also explores the moral and practical implications of a central issue of modern life: personal or individual safety. The modern approach to risk means its effective and efficient denial. There should not be any avoidable risky prospects in one’s life. One should be protected in all circumstances so that the relevant hazards are eliminated as effectively as possible. Some hazards will unavoidably remain, irrespective of whatever one does and wherever one goes. Safety technologies are always the second best alternative to an actually safe, stable, and peaceful environment. Their applications indicate a problem, a failure, and a threat in a situation that should be and preferably is safe without those technologies.
