ABSTRACT

Although the ranks of mixed race Americans is small relative to those who identify themselves as being of one race only, the 2000 Census revealed a burgeoning population, particularly among the young. Increasingly, the rise in the numbers and acceptance of interracial relationships, as well as the offspring that result from them is reflected in popular forums and cultural outlets. Mixed-race Americans who are part Black face a whole other set of challenges. Mixed-race Americans like her, are often confronted with questions from others about whether they are "Black enough" or in some cases "too Black." The challenge is often presented to mixed-race individuals with the initial question of "What are you?" It is a question that pressures individuals to label themselves. There were several women who participated in the project that were mixed race and had one parent who was an African American.
