ABSTRACT

Fights between brothers and sisters are a child’s first opportunity to attempt to resolve conflicts by physical force. There is contemporary evidence illustrating the prevalence of violence between brothers and sisters. Violence between siblings is the most prevalent form of family violence. It also portends much for the future. The amount of sibling violence in one-parent households might well be greater than in two-parent families. A large number of children are perpetrators and victims of violence between siblings. It may be that the unique combination of age and sex of siblings can raise or lower the level of violence. The Sibling Abuse Index consists of all acts of violence that are more serious than pushing, slapping, shoving, and throwing things. Children of non-violent parents also tend to use non-violent methods to deal with their siblings and later with their spouses and children.
