ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines common coercive tactics in a wave of zealotry and the target's initial response of amazement and confusion. The discussion emphasizes the importance of self-education about past periods of zealotry, the ongoing zealotry, and professional academic freedom. The chapter discusses eight lines of defense that a target should consider in any wave of zealotry. It explores the unique problems of the target in the current period of zealotry from the fundamentalist academic left within the faculty itself. The code, effective September 1, 1989, unleashed numerous investigations and nine instances of sanctions for speech that was perceived to be insensitive. The target would conduct herself in a manner considerably above the minimum required by the correlative duties of professional academic freedom. This would substantially restrain the target' responses when zealots engage in conduct violating those duties. The target may initially experience amazement and confusion in the face of zealots coercive tactics.
