ABSTRACT

Academic freedom is rather a wavering flame of recent historical development. It is denied in theory and in practice by much of the world most of the time. There is a great need for serious and continuing attention to the transmission of professional values, ethical standards and academic traditions. There should be explicit instruction for novitiates and continuing regular educational engagement for veteran faculty on these issues. The Commission on Academic Tenure in Higher Education created by the American Association of University Professors and college administrators urged faculties to consider and discuss the adoption of a faculty statement on professional conduct. The Commission recommends that the faculty of each institution assume responsibility for developing a code of faculty conduct and procedures and sanctions for faculty self discipline, for recommending adoption of the code by the institution's governing board, and for making effective use of the code when it has been approved.
