ABSTRACT

The most obvious component of the attachment is, no doubt, the youthful need to reorganize relations between the self and otherness in a manner that will enhance the former and diminish the latter. Elemental things are dangerous; and if youth could not overcommit itself to danger, it could not commit itself to the survival of genuine values—one of the primary steering mechanisms of psychosocial evolution. Youth's problem, as well-informed thousands have maintained, is that of determining when its suspension should end, when the claims of the world should be acknowledged. The descent under the canopy is related to the dive as youth in its solitary splendid retreat is related to youth in community. The tone of the foreign tents during the championship testified that this lazy-raffish, easy-riding youth style belongs to the whole jumping world, not simply to American chutists.
