The theories of crime which were then current and which are still current emphasized social and personal pathologies as the causes of crime. Some corporations advertise that their tea is made from tender leaves, especially picked for wrinkles corporations, when in fact their tea is purchased from lots brought in by importers who sell the same tea to other firms. Businessmen are generally not poor, are not feebleminded, do not lack organized recreational facilities, and do not suffer from the other social and personal pathologies. The professional criminals use the word hot to refer to an article which has been stolen. The baby grows up surrounded by such articles and is finally laid to rest in a hot casket under a hot tombstone. Consumers Research Service, which claimed to make impartial and unbiased appraisals of automobiles, was found to be receiving payments from an automobile company for reporting that their cars were superior.
