ABSTRACT

The bourgeoisie, say Marx and Engels, is preparing for its own interment. They say: “Its fall and the victory of the proletariat are equally inevitable.”In the 20th century, for much of the world, conventional religion is associated with conservative churches: a new generation is most likely to accept a new religion of fundamental reform if it is presented in the style of Science, the religion of the century. In the 16th century the Holy Bible gave the followers of Luther and Calvin a fresh faith by which they could live, die, and kill. In the 20th century the writings of Marx and Engels and Mao Tse-tung have given revolutionaries of our time a faith by which they could justify their reactions to old regimes and their subsequent actions, as they first endured and then inflicted suffering of every imaginable kind.
