ABSTRACT

It is curious that the Hutchins Commission report should be receiving as much attention as it has in the last few years. Curious because the report was fairly widely criticized when it first appeared in 1947 and then seemed to sink without a trace until this very recent surge of interest. As an illustration of the report’s apparent insignificance, consider that only a handful of Supreme Court decisions have ever cited it, despite the fact that a major thrust of the report was directed towards evaluating the legal and constitutional status of the media. An opening question therefore might be, What has led to this revival?
