ABSTRACT

When introducing Murray Kempton for induction into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Joan Didion saluted him as a “stylist” who “in an age of conflicting correctnesses remains steadfastly, defiantly, deliberately and gloriously incorrect.” She rang truest, however, when she praised Kempton as a moralist who is also a “great street reporter.”
