ABSTRACT

I’m pretty sure it was a few days after the 1984 presidential election. I know it was a time when my newspaper, The Herald in Everett, Wash., and every other newspaper in the United States was reporting the election. A postcard arrived in The Herald executive editor’s in-box, and it asked a question that made me squirm: “Why don’t you publish the number of votes cast for Socialist Party candidates, or for any candidates other than the Republicans and Democrats?”
