ABSTRACT

Riven was the sequel to Myst, the best-selling PC video game ever made. Cyan, the company that made both of the games, sold around seven million copies of Myst and made close to 150 million dollars on the game. The premise of the Myst story is the confinement of two brothers, Sirrus and Achenar, in magical books that serve as a dungeon. The "story" consists of our wandering around in this deserted world, in which we are—in a sense—prisoners, looking for Catherine and Gehn and having to solve various puzzles before we can achieve our goal and conclude the game. These "puzzles" are similar, in nature, to the tasks mythological heroes faced when pursuing their goals and the various difficulties heroes in fairytales face when sent on some mission. The quality of the drawings in the game is remarkable. We are almost hypnotized by the drawings of the landscape, the sound effects, and the haunting music.
