ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some preliminary insights into the question of what types of second homes there are in South Africa and what impacts second home development holds for different types of urban settlements. These case studies include: the coastal towns of the southern part of the Western Cape Province—Overstrand; a small rural town in the eastern Free State province—Clarens; a small coastal village in KwaZulu-Natal—Zinkwasi; and a neighborhood in the Cape Town metropolitan area—De Waterkant. The chapter explores second home development in South Africa and deals with the methodology employed in this investigation. Internationally, second homes are investigated as an integral part of contemporary tourism and mobility, with the development of various types of urban areas explained owing to second home development and investment. The chapter focuses on the empirical realities of the case studies, providing detailed analyses of the nature and dynamics of second home-owners and their use of such properties in these respective areas.
