ABSTRACT

The possibility of Outs returning seems more remote than that of Ins leaving, despite the fact that fewer Outs exclude the possibility of a change of status. The follow-up questionnaire also provides interesting data on its major point of attack, the belief systems of Ins. Over the short period that intervened between the original interview and the follow-up, the thirty responding Ins showed a statistically significant decline in their average acceptance of the twenty beliefs, approaching closer to the zero point of the scale. The effect was contributed to equally by males and females. On the key contraception item, Ins became more rejecting of what, in effect, was the pope’s position. Males showed more of a change than females, but females continued to be the greater dissenters. Of all twenty beliefs, the one having the most significant drop was that on papal infallibility, Ins shifting from something less than “Possibly True” to something approaching “Possibly False.”.
