ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book offeres an analysis which shows that the outcome is opposite of what the myth might suggest; that this outcome is what is really sought, despite disclaimers. It says that the system of public education in the United States is specifically designed to aid in the perpetuation of the social and economic inequalities found within the society. The book seeks to document that all of the evils find clear expression in the public schools. It addresses the social ramifications and policy implications of a revaluation of the role of schools in American society. The book demonstrates how one particular school did operate so as to reinforce the inequalities found in the larger society. It seeks to describe the process by which one particular urban school generated successes and failures.
