ABSTRACT
This chapter explains the patterns of social organization and the processes of socialization the children experienced during the course of their kindergarten year. The final narrowing of the analysis was intended to reach the ultimate output from the funnel—individual children from within a single classroom within one school in the entire city school system. The chpater provides the segments of life in the classroom, admittedly chosen selectively but with the hope of providing an accurate reconstruction of how one teacher and her students made it through the year. The division of the activities of the children by seasons most closely reflects the manner in which Mrs. Caplow herself saw the various segments of the school year. One of her major considerations was to insure that two important dates fell in each segment, the events for fall being Halloween and Thanksgiving; for winter, Christmas and Valentine's Day; and for spring, Easter and May Day.
