ABSTRACT

As the summer of 1919 waned, all the wings of the mangled. Socialist movement converged on Chicago for the battle of the conventions. The Right Wing mobilized for the convention of the official Socialist party which opened at Machinists' Hall, 113 South Ashland Boulevard, on August 30. The main body of the Left Wing moved into position for a separate convention to organize a pure, genuine Communist party at the headquarters of the Russian Federation, 1221 Blue Island Avenue, on September 1. The name of the new party, the Communist Labor party of America, was not adopted until September 2, though the actual birth is often dated from the opening of the convention on August 31. Organizationally, the Socialist party was the basic model for the new Communist parties. A new vocabulary had come into vogue as the writings of V. I. Lenin, Leon Trotsky, Nikolai Bukharin, and other Russian leaders had become available.
