“Enemy images” are prejudices and heterostereotypes that permit the transvaluation of values. Beck makes particular reference to the integrative—in the sense, positive—characteristics of enemy images. The National Socialists’ enemy image of the Soviet Union displayed extraordinarily persistent tendencies in Austria even after the war. Anti-Communism provided a new label for the old national conflicts from the time of the Monarchy. Anti-Communism in Austria could fall back on even older enemy images going back to the nationality conflicts in the Monarchy prior to 1918. The disadvantaged state of eastern Austria must therefore be considered in a way that covers many different aspects. The Soviet Union thus claimed the right to utilize the extensive German property in Austria actually as war reparations. The economic actions and operations of the Soviet occupation forces in Austria—to the extent that they can be accessed on the basis of Austrian source material.
