ABSTRACT
ASIDE from the books, articles, and reports listed in the bibliography, the author has found the files of several newspapers to be indispensable resources: the Hazleton Daily Standard, the Wilkes-Barre Times, the New York Times, the Pottsville Republican, the United Mine Workers Journal, the Pottsville Daily Miners’ Journal; and from Philadelphia, the Inquirer, the Press, the Public Ledger, the North American, and the Evening Bulletin. In addition, individual articles have been consulted in the New York Sun, the New York Journal, the Hazleton Sentinel, the Hazleton Plain Speaker, the Wilkes- Barre Record and also the Leader, the Utica Illustrated Weekly, and others.
