ABSTRACT

Superwomen are a mixed blessing for women who live to work. Their rise to the top in male-dominated professions sets a precedent which makes the way easier for those who wish to follow in their paths. But super-women also provide an unrealistic model which is not possible for most women with children to emulate. Women need more than equal opportunity with men to get to the top. Law has become extraordinarily attractive for the new generation of women who live to work. Law offers status and potentially high income. Women who lived to work in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries had a qualitatively different experience from that of modern women. Very few were wives or mothers, and therefore they did not face the overwhelming difficulties of balancing motherhood and career.
