ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that some corollary concepts of the instrumental value principle and representative applications to areas of contemporary revolutionary unrest. It also suggests that the resolution of political and economic problems in particular probably requires the use of this criterion in lieu of other proffered theories of value. The chapter considers some explicit and implicit elements of this instrumental principle of social value. A corollary ethical concept for the economic revolution is the criterion of instrumental efficiency. Interest focuses upon the relevance of instrumental efficiency as a criterion in determining the level, character, and distribution of production. Technical efficiency denotes extracting maximum output from resource inputs. A corollary ethical concept for the political revolution is the criterion of democracy. The idea of democracy itself may be used as a criterion, a standard in terms of which to make choices among institutional and candidate options.
