ABSTRACT

The activities of the Nili Group have been documented by its members and by its survivors who saw themselves as the Nili's disciples and inheritors. The historiography of Nili, its activities and members, is extensive. This chapter explores the issues, and presents sources and documents which are published for the first time. It examines several of them, including a deeper look at the development of the attitude of Aaron Aaronsohn, the central figure in the group, to the Armenian question. Sarah Aaronsohn returned to Eretz Yisrael from Constantinople at the end of December 1915, to become another central figure in the underground Nili group. The Armenians whisper to themselves: if it is good to be Constitutional Turks, it is better to be independent Armenians, like Egypt. Avshalom Feinberg's report to Henrietta Szold appears to be the first written account from Palestine of the destruction of the Armenians in 1915.
