The Spirit of Overkill was everywhere in this period. Drifting sluggishly over the land from the international power struggle, a dense, polluting wave, it penetrated the very marrow of the culture. Journalism, conversation, manners, the arts—the innermost thoughts and feelings of men—all were touched or tainted.
