ABSTRACT

By this, not one is added to the number of the slaves; on the contrary, the number is thus most likely to diminish. The inducement which more than all others leads the master to liberate his slave, is the affection of the master. To the growth of that affection the good conduct of the slave, intimate and familiar intercourse with the master, the sympathy of asso ciation mainly conduce. The master does not liberate his slave from ha tred, but from love; from a desire to benefit him, as a reward for fidelity.
