ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the material and agricultural infrastructure, combined with the ingenuity of the human species to create higher forms of energy and greater amounts of food, can and will support a population several times that of the current human family. It demonstrates that a larger population can be supported, many still question whether we should encourage demographic growth. The first reason for encouraging population growth stems from the positive relationship between population increase and economic prosperity. A second reason for encouraging population growth is that growing populations attract outside investment and simultaneously pour more of their own money into building the economy. A third reason, and considered by some the most important, relates to the human talent pool. Larger numbers increase the chances that the next Einstein, Freud, or Beethoven will be born. According to Freeman, "any effective blueprint for increasing agricultural production worldwide must incorpoate development and application of crop and food related technology".
