ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a case history of a young woman, named, Mildred a self-initiated patient, treated in individual therapy by conventional means: directed interviews, permitting her to recount instances of her behavior and that of others, interpretations, and also by roleplaying, which seems to have been the means which hastened an apparently successful conclusion. It also provides an example of the use of role-playing in helping a person gain social competency. By roleplaying two crucial scenes in her life, Mildred gained experience, direct and meaningful to her, which enabled her to act in a more competent manner instead of running away in a panic. The roleplaying alone did not affect her whole personality. It must be remembered that the entire therapeutic relationship lasted for some forty sessions, and only two of these involved roleplaying. However, they were timed just right and in each case there was a successful conclusion.
