ABSTRACT

Roleplaying directors have developed a considerable number of structured procedures for a variety of therapeutic purposes. The most popular format variation is known as role reversal. Role reversal helps the patient to see himself as others see him and also gives possibilities for empathizing with someone else. The ingenuity of roleplaying directors is indicated by the fact that although this chapter lists several format variations and in the glossary, many more have been used. Indeed, every roleplaying director invents new variations to meet the needs of special situations. In general, when a problem arises that cannot be handled by more conventional methods of the interview, interpretation, or narration, roleplaying can be considered. Roleplaying may open up new areas for investigation. In some cases, a short drama, which seems to have no particular meaning, at least at first, stimulates the patient and tends to generate meaning. The therapist's creativity is of the essence in using roleplaying procedures.
