ABSTRACT

In 1839 Stallo arrived in Cincinnati ready to take his chances. It was difficult for him to find a suitable occupation, however, in that he was too well educated to become a laborer, but not prepared to engage in a trade. Eventually he found a position as a German teacher in a local parish school. Finding that there was no suitable primer for the teaching of German, Stallo undertook immediately the task of preparing one; it was published anonymously in 1840 under the title of A.B.C: Buchstabir und Lesebuch fur die deutschen Schulen Amerikas. The book went through many editions and was widely used by schools in all parts of the country.
