ABSTRACT

The landing of the Spaniards preceded in Mexico by a succession of bad omens. An evil omen appeared in the sky, ten years before the Spaniards arrived. It was like a flaming ear of com, a fiery signal, or the blaze of daybreak like a wound in the sky which seemed to bleed fire, drop by drop. As its first appeared, there was a great outcry and confusion. The people beat their hands against their mouths; they were bewildered and frightened, and wondered its presence. There were eight bad omens in Mexico. The others appeared shortly before the Spaniard's arrival in the province of Tlaxcala. The author further says that bad omens sent messages to the magicians. They told that nothing is hidden from them regarding sickness which is going to strike, hunger, locusts, storms on the lake, or droughts and prediction of rain.
