ABSTRACT

I returned to the United States in the fall of 1932, when the American people had elected Franklin D. Roosevelt by an overwhelming majority. In Europe, Conservatives, Liberals, Labourites, Clericals, Fascists, and Nazis with surprising unanimity acclaimed Roosevelt’s accession to power. His rhetoric was lofty; his airs grand. More important still, there had to be a change. Everybody sensed that this self-assured, sardonic man would bring it.
