ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the official deprecation of extreme specialisation, though how to combine adequate concentration on specific problems with a generously wide perspective of surrounding knowledge is a question that remains unanswered in every branch of science. It suggests that the memorial take the form of a campaign against tuberculosis in Wales where, because of the specially strong dread of open windows, it is very rife, and the suggestion was adopted, with results that are well known. There is no doubt that success of the kind is taken by the unconscious mind as a sign that fortune is pleased with one, and that there is no need for further selfcriticism or moral effort. Wilfred Trotter was exceedingly sensitive to the nuances of social relationships, and was always acutely aware of what the other person was feeling. To him the insensitive people who blunder or bludgeon their way through life, were in the highest degree repellent.
