ABSTRACT

Music for the Flathead may be either an individual or a group activity, and a correlation is evident with the type of song being sung. The degree to which a group is brought together in its music and dance activities is difficult to ascertain, for it is not easy to determine the point at which integration is complete. Music is also primarily an adult activity for the Flathead. Women participate in other music activities; in the War Dance, the ideal is that women come to the center of the circle and assist the male musicians by joining them in singing. The Flathead consider the proper sounds for making music to consist of those sounds produced by the human voice when singing, plus the sound of the flageolet and the sound of the hand and war drums. Musicians sometimes seek the help of the police in getting rid of a drunken singer when they cannot handle the situation themselves.
