ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The part examines some of the "endogenous" factors that will affect future Latino political success, especially the naturalization of the burgeoning Latino immigrant population. It argues that as Latinos strive for greater equality, the distinctiveness of the Latino culture must necessarily be diminished. The part looks at Latinos working together with certain elements of the core cultural majority. It details how distinctive ethnic and racial minorities must work together to advance common interests and must work hard to diminish sources of conflict. The part describes that education may be at the top of the agenda for the nation and for Latinos. Maria Torres sees democratization and incorporation coming in both the United States and Latin America and hopes that the United States will adopt a less threatening international posture.
