ABSTRACT
In New York State a left-of-center Republican and former Under Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare in the Eisenhower Administration, Nelson Rockefeller, moved into Albany behind a half-million-vote plurality. Walter Kohler campaigned as an “Eisenhower Republican.” But Proxmire, rated as the underdog, nevertheless won a sensational upset victory, carrying fifty-six of the state’s seventy-one counties, including several rock-ribbed Republican farm centers. The burden of the black demands funneling into the White House centered on Fred Morrow, the closest Negro to the President. Harlem’s Amsterdam News ran a front-page “bulletin” announcing that their efforts to get a reply to the black leaders’ request “brought the comment that the White House press secretaries were on tour of the drought areas with the President.” Eisenhower then appointed Dr. James R. Killian of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Special Assistant to the President for Science and Technology.
