ABSTRACT

In many works of entertainment it is suggested that there is no alternative to endless violence, except conformity in which one's authenticity was forfeit. In wartime in Britain neurotic disorders decreased rather than increased. The acclaim of cultural nihilism is a contribution to mental illness at large. The whole tide of the culture has become devoted to denying and negating all these human capacities, and exposing them to a cynical nihilism, and hate. Maslow's Conference on 'New Knowledge in Human Values' was conceived as a first organizing step in this direction. He came to believe that cruelty, hatred and injustice can never create a mental, moral or material millennium, and that the creative, unselfish work of love for humanity at large is the key to the reconstruction of the world. The chapter presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in this book.
