ABSTRACT

Flatness finds other important outlets in the manipulation of inner space represented by furniture and architecture's use of outer space. The set owner's expectations usually level off after a few months and his comparatively undemanding approach to color quality and definition is reinforced by the flatness of other colors in the environment. His children's ability to discriminate color may be muted and dulled by such technological forces. The flatness that foam rubber gives to chairs becomes increasingly evident as chair styles become more flat and influence sitting, the symbolic posture of our time. Undoubtedly, one factor contributing to the sterile look of much modern furniture is its size. The tendency to make everything smaller means that contemporary furniture is seldom large enough to be masculine and its small scale contributes to difficulties in achieving flowing feminine lines and curves. American furniture preferences of the last several generations have faithfully reflected the style of life of the times.
