ABSTRACT

Sharon was admitted to the research group when she was three years and four months old. Her mother reported that she first noticed that "something was wrong" when Sharon was less than one year old. The usual signs of infantile autism (Rimland, 1964) were reported by the mother: Sharon's failure to relate affectionately, inability to distinguish parents, desire to be alone, and rigidity when picked up and held. Although Sharon had not acquired speech, she maintained complete control over the family with her raging temper tantrums, which suggested that she was capable of operating upon her environment in a communicative manner.
