ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author talks about social inequalities and about social exclusion in its various forms. The rhythm of work at GUS could be difficult, particularly compared with the rhythm of work at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology. The author worked at GUS until 1978, the final two years as chief specialist. Reliable statistical data showed that in 1976—duringthe Gierek period—more than a million children were at risk of poverty. Work at GUS had many benefits, including psychological ones. The official government censor from Mysia Street gave the green light as well, after the consent of the GUS censor. Researchers deal with factors and problems of quite a different nature than in the 1970s. At GUS the author learned how to reach for primary data, how to check it, and how to use categorized data cautiously.
