ABSTRACT

IN the sixties, my relation with Philip Rahv, which had been bad for a long time, came to an end. It is an unpleasant story, difficult to tell, and up to now I have talked about it only to a few friends. But it is central to the history of the magazine, and there has been so much inaccurate gossip about it that I feel it must no longer be treated as a badly kept family secret. Obviously, I can write about it only from my viewpoint—but as objectively as possible.
