ABSTRACT

Through a notice I posted at Columbia University, I found a rider to Chicago—Yoram Barzel, an Israeli who was going to study economics. Yoram is a wonderful economist and a pleasant companion, but at that time his English was such a struggle to understand that we talked very little on the trip, which I regretted then because I needed conversation to make the driving of my old clunker pass more quickly, and which I regret now because it would have been interesting talk.
