ABSTRACT

the reason why everything had looked so small to me in Treptow when I revisited it on the day after I met Hildegard was that I hadn’t been there since April 1932. That year we moved from Treptow to the fashionable Wilmersdorf district in the West. So I remembered distances and dimensions of objects in Treptow scaled to the body size of the eight-year-old child that I had been, rather than to that of the twenty-two-year-old adult into whom I had meanwhile grown.
