ABSTRACT

Information society aspects became more pronounced in 1980 with the establishment of the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina in the Park. The Research Triangle is a great asset to the State of North Carolina. The center is designed to unify electronics research and education efforts of the three triangle universities, plus that of the Research Triangle Institute in the Park, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University at Greensboro. In a way, the Research Triangle is the marriage of North Carolina’s ideals for higher education and its hope for material progress”. In the long run, justification will be through the creation of more and better jobs by virtue of spin-off industrial growth in the state, stemming from research by the center and associated research institutions. The research orientation and physical characteristics of the center, the equipment requirements, and other potential bases for disagreement were significant causes of debate.
