ABSTRACT

Life space is being colonized by capital, to be absorbed into the economic space of the world system. Accepting that, a reordering of values becomes the initial and most important step: life must come first, then livelihood. Economic space is superposed over the life spaces of individuals and communities. This creates the illusion of national, regional, and even urban economies. The principal actors which constitute and, indeed, produce this abstract economic space are firms and corporations. As the multiple economic crises grow in severity, and the need for intervention by the State increases, the ability and, indeed, the willingness of citizens to fund the interventions of the State declines. It would assist political bodies in articulating their needs and possibilities for development, provide information that is pertinent, project images of possible futures, and carry out specific technical studies for its client, which is the political community at large and not merely the central State.
