ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the more limited programs and practices which, with varying degrees of success, are operating across Canada. It provides an overview of the roles of the federal and provincial governments. This sets the scene for a more detailed discussion of environmental provisions in Ontario. The chapter discusses two environmental advisory bodies, one in Alberta and the other in Saskatchewan. A major technique, of growing significance, in environmental protection is the assessment of the impact which a proposed development is likely to have. The chapter also deals with environmental impact assessment at the federal level, environmental assessment in Ontario, the extension of environmental assessment to include social and cultural issues, and the nature and role of environmental assessment in the larger decision-making process. In Ontario, an ad hoc body was established in 1981 to assist in dealing with the problems, the Ontario Waste Management Corporation. The chapter concludes with the subject of heritage conservation.
