ABSTRACT
Walking in the West of England long ago, I met a stranger who said with passion that a man’s most important doings were what he built and what he begot. Since we are not more than half responsible for what we breed, he might have stated his case even more strongly. The most enduring signature that a man can inscribe on the world is a building.
