ABSTRACT

In this chapter we shall examine the structures that house welfare recipients, and their quality and type as a function of welfare category and ethnicity. We shall first describe the type and quality of welfare housing, and then review the density patterns of welfare housing. Has the growth of welfare expenditures in New York City been attended by a growth in the number of buildings that house welfare recipientsthat is, a geographical expansion of the locus of welfare housing? Or rather is it accompanied by greater density of welfare recipients within specific structures?
