ABSTRACT

The battle between the evolutionists and counter-evolutionists seems to have no end. Intelligent design theory is being advocated by a group of believing scientists and mathematicians who focus on the inherent weakness of the theory of evolution. In general, the criticisms of intelligent design theory of evolutionary theory have great strength since much of the argumentation of evolutionary theory is rhetorical and inferential rather than based on direct empirical evidence. As evolutionary psychology has considered altruistic acts, it has offered such theories as "kin selection" and "reciprocal altruism", which explain self-sacrificial acts by human beings as strategies to preserve and pass on their genes. Some current theorists have attempted a fuller explanation of religious belief following the rubrics of evolutionary psychology by integrating data from the behavioral and cognitive scientific fields with evolution. The persistence of religious belief remains a major challenge to evolutionary psychology and, according to E. O. Wilson, dealing with religious belief is sociobiology's biggest challenge.
