ABSTRACT

The best-known president of Argentina, internationally, was undoubtedly Juan Peron. The Falklands question dominated diplomatic talks in New York on 26 and 27 February between the UN representatives of Britain, and Argentina. Britain's team was headed by Richard Luce, minister of state and the Argentinian by Enrique Ros, deputy foreign minister. Also present were two Falklands representatives: John Cheek of the islands Legislative Council, and Tony Blake, a farmer. During question time in Britain's House of Commons or 3 March, Richard Luce reaffirmed that Britain had no doubt about its sovereignty over the Falkland Islands or about its duty to the Falklanders. The Argentine statement had caused "deep anxiety" and "there can be no contemplation of any transfer of sovereignty without consulting the wishes of the islanders, nor without the consent of this House". It was clear that Argentina was about to attempt naval and military action in the Falklands, although the degree of the force contemplated was not clear.
