ABSTRACT

The destruction of masses of people have occurred throughout the history of mankind. Most people agree, however, that the twentieth century saw more genocides than any another century, and some perceive and define it as the “century of the genocides,” “the century of violence,” or the “century of crime.” For Jewish people, and for Israelis, this view—including the research and teaching aspects of genocide-should be of especially great interest. In Israel, there are two main approaches to the teaching of genocide. The first maintains that this subject should not be taught at all, and that only the Holocaust should be dealt with in the education system. The second approach subscribes to the teaching of genocide, but with a distinct division between it and the Holocaust. Our approach, however advocates the teaching of the Holocaust and genocide as one inclusive subject.
