Montaigne, to whom I have come with astonishment and delight in these later years, talked lyrically about the language of our hands, head, eyebrows, shoulders. He would have appreciated Erving Goffman. Goffman no doubt recognised from Montaigne this simple truth: though later theories order, illuminate and develop our understanding, some of the insights within those theories were expressed demotically long before others saw, elaborated, and passed them from hand to specialist hand.
